Getting Ready to Decorate the Guest Bedroom

The front bedroom at the cottage is almost ready for decorating. This is the part I enjoy the most! My vibe for the entire cottage is a modern Jane Austen feeling. In this post, you’ll see what we’ve done in the room so far and my ideas for creating the cottage look in our guest bedroom

What We’ve Done So Far

After stripping the room back to the lining we installed insulation and plastered the walls. There was a lot of work to be done on the ceiling: cleaning off years of grime, applying stain blocking paint and filling the gaps between every board and batten.  I spent time refurbishing the window to make it function and added a Georgian style surround. The windows had no trim before. I painted the ceiling with my new favourite creamy neutral. pairing with with deep olive green. I also created a feature wall using gorgeous floral wallpaper. The bed will go in front of this. Our electrician also installed new power points and a rattan pendant light.

What We Need to the Guest Bedroom Now

Having cleaned the bricks on the chimney, it did not look as we hoped. So we decided to paint the bricks to match the chimney in the lounge. We also need to lay tile on the hearth and clean the inside of the fireplace. The door needs to be hung and the new architrave installed. We also need to seal the floor. We’ve decided to go with a liming white. It gives the appearance of pale bare boards.

The Fun Part of the Process

Decorating  the room is always the most exciting part of the  process.  The fixtures we’ve installed so far give a clear indication of my direction for this guest bedroom. What I’m trying to create is a cosy, calming room where guests feel they can laze in comfort and never want to leave. I want the elements to come together seamlessly to create a coordinated, layered look. To achieve this I’ll be using many of the furniture pieces from the bedrooms at the farmhouse. I’ve deliberately chosen a darker patterned wallpaper for a moodier feel.

Our black cabinet may get a makeover and new wallpaper will line the back to tie in with the scheme. The armchair will have new upholstery. As you can see from the mood board below. I’ve repeated the scallop detail of the pendant light in a rug. I would like to carry this element throughout the house. I would also like to introduce another rattan element, possibly in the from of a blind. The bed will be layered with patterned linen and cushions to create a collected english cottage feel. Our large collection of art will adorn the walls and heavy linen drapes will frame the window.

What do you think? I’d love you to tell me in the comments.
