Why You Should Furnish Your House with Second Hand

There are many reasons to furnish your house with second-hand things. By second hand I’m not simply talking furniture either but accessories, china, silverware. Anything that you love, really. But why would you buy second-hand when you can pop to Ikea for the latest trend? Here are my top reasons to furnish your home with second hand stuff and why we did.

Trends Come and Go

One reason to furnish your home with second had is that fashions change. Trends come and go. Even in the world of old and antique, trends come in and go out. But the Ikea trend of 2021 will not be in fashion in three years let alone thirty. To keep up to date with the latest Instagram fashion, you’ll need to get rid of the stuff you have and buy more. Probably at a fraction of what you paid. And I don’t know about you but I don’t have the time or the inclination to do that every couple of years. Let alone the cash.

The Next Reason to Furnish Your House with Second Hand

Is that second-hand and thrifted pieces cost less than new. You can furnish your entire home for around a quarter (or less) than buying new. And who doesn’t want to save money? Even on a tight budget you can get creative with what you’ve been given, trawl kerbside pickups and look at garage sales. It won’t be long until you find things you love.

Furnish Your House with Second Hand For Quality

The quality is better. When furniture and homewares were made a century ago they were made to last. Hence the reason why they’re still with us today. Pieces were made with dovetail joints and finished with shellac. Today everything is spray-varnished and finished with a brad nailer. Or made of fake wood. We live in a throwaway society. To get quality you have to pay handsomely. . . or buy a someone’s pre-loved items.

Antiques have Character

Antiques and vintage pieces have personality and character. There’s a piece to suit every decorating style. Vintage pieces add a layer of history to a room that tells a story new pieces can’t. If you want to add character and charm to your home, an old piece will do that. A vintage piece can create a focal point in a room when you don’t have one.
