DIY Vintage Botanical Wallhanging
Nothing says vintage style more than a few carefully curated botanical prints. Frame them, hang them old school style on a dowel or print them onto fabric for later use. There are so many ways to bring nature inside when you use these images. Inspired by Joanna Gaines and the Magnolia blog, I downloaded my own set of botanical prints and set to work to make this quick but super effective farmhouse botanical wallhanging. This vintage wall hanging DIY completed the makeover of our first guest bedroom.
The Bedroom Before
The guest bedroom was renovated in October 2018 when the floors were restained and the room repainted. I’d never dressed the room so it looked very bare. It certainly wasn’t a sanctuary when guests came to stay and with the imminent arrival of my son and his partner, I wanted to make the room cosy. A DIY vintage botanical wallhanging was high on the list of requirements to achieve this. These vintage style wall hangings create a country feel, bring nature into the room and are not too feminine for my son.
Materials for the DIY
After seeing a tutorial on the Magnolia blog, I found some prints I loved, downloaded them and printed them out at Officeworks online. I chose the poster size print 42cmx 59cm because I want them to make an impact in the room. I made the hour drive into the city to pick them up and I collected the other supplies I didn’t have while I was there. This project cost me $13.50 per hanging, which is awesome value for new art on my walls.
How I Assembled My DIY Vintage Botanical Wallhanging
As you can see from the video, assembly of my DIY vintage botanical wallhanging took me less than ten minutes. I cut the dowel in half as I bought a metre length. This made the perfect width for the poster, leaving a slight overhang on each edge. I then pushed the screw eyes into the ends of the rods and twisted them into place with the end of a pair of scissors.
To secure the dowel to the poster, I ran a bead of Aquahere (craft glue/white glue) along the edge of the poster and pressed the dowel onto this. A hot glue gun would also do the job. My hot glue gun does not work well and I need to invest in a better one! However, the craft glue dried very quickly and stayed stuck. I pegged the poster in place while it dried to stop movement.
