Vintage Farmhouse Office Inspiration
The time has come to complete the office makeover. As you know, this little attic room has had two incarnations since Christmas 2019. First, it received a quick coat of paint and was transformed into a cosy bedroom for our daughter during her stay. Then, in the holidays, I turned it back into my office by removing the bed. The space was perfectly functional as it was but it was not nice and needed complete renovation. So, today, in preparation for the office makeover, I’m going to share my vintage farmhouse office inspiration mood board and sources. This space is small but boy, do I have big plans!
My Plans For the Farmhouse Office
The office space needs re-cladding. Desperately. At some time in the seventies, the plaster was replaced with timber veneer which is only a few millimetres thick, very dated and was painted grey. (Not by me! Never by me!) My plan here is to reuse the leftover shiplap lining we have in the garage to create horizontal lining the same we found in the other rooms of the house. I’ll install this over the top of the veneer to save time and add some extra insulation. Not only will this save us money but it will use up the extra materials we have out in the garage. I’ll have to buy more lining to finish the job but that’s okay.
My french style desk will stay white. I’m going to introduce other darker timber elements to complement my cabinet. These will come in the form of a coat rail (for guest storage) and my Japanese screen. I love the juxtaposition of timber against white in the vintage office picture below.
Drawing on the rustic vibe of the room, (let’s face it, it’s an attic, it was never fancy) I want to add extra lighting in the form of naked pendants. This will be useful for filming if I install cool LED globes and provide a bedside option for next to the sleigh bed. I also want to add a rug, either vintage style or jute. This will add warmth and reduce the echo in the room.
Speaking of the bed, my plan for this portion of the vintage farmhouse office is to convert it to a day bed I can use when I’m up there. That way, if we have guests and need the extra room it can easily be made up.
As you know, the room doubles as a bedroom, so I want to keep it soft. I’m the only one who comes up here so its the perfect opportunity to add some vintage florals and maybe a dusky pink with linen ruffles. I loved the pink and white at Christmas, so I think I’ll play with this colour scheme. The walls will be the same white as throughout the house.
My last idea is to introduce a couple of more rustic, industrial elements in the form of wire baskets. I have a vintage wire tray so adding a couple of functional baskets or hanging shelves will tie in well with the theme.
