Valentine’s Day at the Farm
Before I go any further, I should explain we’re not big on celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Why? Valentine’s is not a holiday in Australia, Mr GGF is often away at work and to say we’re a romantic couple would be a stretch, so the day is easily overlooked. Added to that, neither of us are big on wasting money on cards or flowers on a day that really means nothing when so many other days do.
This year, however, I decided to do something to show Mr GGF how special he is to me. And because we’re madly saving for our holiday to the UK, it’s ‘love on a budget’ all the way! I hope he’s pleasantly surprised by my efforts. 🙂
Firstly, I added a garland to my vintage silkworm tray.
It was easy to do. I used my jute string, some cardboard heart cut-outs and mini pegs I had leftover after Christmas. The hardest part of this DIY was clipping the cardboard with those teeny pegs!
Next, I got out my collection of wicker hearts. (Yes, I have a collection. It’s terribly sad)
I hung one on the mantle and added some fresh silver birch branches in a vase. They were shooting out the side of the trunk so I’m fairly sure they weren’t meant to be there. No trees were harmed in the chopping. I’m a believer in using what you have on hand for decorating. Yes, I could have bought the $16 bunch of carnations or roses from the supermarket but as I said, ‘BUDGET!’ Being cut straight from the garden has the added bonus of being fresher and lasting longer. (I may still get the flowers, though)
I draped a wicker heart garland over the kitchen dresser and hung a single one on the doorknob. I have no idea how I ended up with all these hearts. It just sort of happened. ??‍♀️
My last token of love was to weed the garden.
And believe me, that’s the hugest token ever! I hate gardening more than you could ever know unless it involves telling Mr GGF my opinion on where to plant things. But Mr GGF loves the garden and when he flies in from work there’s little time enough to be together, so I figure that’s a gift he’ll like. (Clearly, this picture is BEFORE I weeded. I can see those sticky, itchy things poking out of the lavender). Now we can go out for Valentine’s lunch when he comes home from work!
