Sunny Floral Guest Bedroom Makeover
The guest bedroom was Mr GGF’s and my room for the first six months we lived at the farm. It is a bright, sunny room with original features such as a chimney breast, timber ceilings and mouldings. When it came time to finish the renovation of this room by adding the details, I wanted to keep with the country feel and bring the outside into the room. There was also no way I was painting a varnished pine ceiling after tackling the living area. So I decided to make the most of the colour and bring a natural floral theme to the space.
Here is my mood board for the space.

My Choices for the Floral Guest Bedroom
My inspiration for this botanical guest bedroom was two-fold. Firstly, I wanted to incorporate the watercolour paintings of flowers I inherited from my grandmother. My great, great aunt painted these early last century. Secondly, I had to make sure the room was not too feminine. Our son and his partner stay with us regularly. I wanted the children to feel at home but like they were in a lovely country hotel. Sticking to the limited colour palette used in the rest of the house, I needed to use pops of colour to liven up the room. I like to use a different colour accent in different rooms while maintaining a neutral backdrop. Floral touches in art and cushions seemed to be the way to go. If I decide to redecorate these accessories can easily be changed.

Decorating the Room
Most of the items in the room are vintage, antique or reclaimed. I chose a modern Japanese floral fabric for the cushions. I also made a set of yellow polka dot cushions (not pictured). These can be swapped with the sunny yellow ones in the photo.
The bed linen is a simple crisp white that enhances the bold colours in the throw and cushions.

To make the ceiling colour a part of the scheme, I introduced an antique pine cabinet for storage. I reused a lamp that has a thin ply shade in the same colour.
I added texture in the form of the lighting from Ikea, the printer’s trays I hung side by side as wall art and the jute rug on the floor. And no, I do not intend to add ‘trinkets’ to the trays. I’d rather admire the architectural shape of the trays themselves and why have more to dust?

To complete the floral guest bedroom makeover, I mixed old and new by adding modern art in the form of handwritten lyrics (by Bono of U2). I updated the armchair with a coat of chalk paint and purchased a new mirror. It’s hiding behind the little louvre doors on the wall!

DIYs in the Room
My handiwork fills this sunny floral guest bedroom makeover.
- The curtains are made from drop cloth. (Yet to be hemmed like the rest of the house)
- A black spray-painted chair was used as a bedside. Every room needs a touch of black to ground it
- I made the botanical wall hangings in an hour. You can find the tutorial for that HERE
- Find out how to make an envelope style cushion cover HERE. (Just leave out the ruffle!)
