Our Farmhouse Cosy Reading Nook

For the past month or so, I’ve been pondering how to create a cosy reading nook for the little area next to our chimney. As mentioned in a previous post, I love the idea of having somewhere to sit to soak up the winter sun. Today, I’m going to share with you my finished nook. It’s getting a lot of use already!

The elements of my cosy nook

When I designed my nook I wanted to include a number of cosy elements. Clearly, I needed a chair! I had a couple of options. In the end, I decided against bringing the old armchair out of the spare room. Firstly, it needs recovering and I simply don’t have the motivation at the moment. Secondly, it’s a very large armchair. I felt it might overwhelm the space so I went with the vintage chair from my office. This chair blends perfectly with our current decor scheme. It’s a mix of bleached oak and cream upholstery.

The next two elements I added to my cosy nook was a rug and a cushion. Again, I went with what I already have in my stash. That is, one of the cute mustard polka dot cushion covers I made last year. These are such fun covers, I used them all over the house at various times last year! They’re a very cosy Autumn tone but look lovely with spring or summer vibes. The cushion covers and just the right vibrancy to coordinate with the dark charcoal colour of our french doors. The doors, by the way, do not work. We had them screwed shut last year as they do not have a lock. We have plenty of doors in this space already.

To add an extra cosy layer, I added a throw. I picked this one up at Kmart. It was a complete impulse buy but for only $18 it adds a layer of Autumn comfort to my little corner. The mustard and grey are perfect for our neutral colour scheme.

More Cosy Touches

There are a few other small things that make this cosy nook inviting. The first is the stool made by a local artisan. It’s rustic and adds a textural element to the corner. As does the wicker heart I’ve hung from the door. It provides a spot for me to put my coffee and a stack of my favourite decorating books. On top of the books, I added a little touch of Easter with a bunny egg cup and a cosy candle also sourced from Kmart for only $9. The spiced chai and sage scent is the perfect autumn blend. The thing I love about these candles is the amber jar. I had one last year and I’ve kept the glass jar to use this autumn.

Finishing Touches

To complete my corner, I’ve added an Autumn print on the wall. You can grab this download by adding your email address to my list. I love how cute it looks. The Autumn tones are exactly what I’m aiming for this season.

I hope this cosy nook has inspired you to create a spot to cuddle up in this Autumn. I know I’m looking forward to lighting a candle and grabbing a book.
