My Favourite Ways to Add Seasonal Decor to the Farmhouse

I love seasonal decor as much as the next girl. There’s nothing like ringing in a new time of the year by making small changes to the interior to your home. Adding seasonal accessories doesn’t mean you have to go full-on pumpkins or lemon table runners unless that’s your thing. What it can mean is one or two simple swaps you can do in a minute. Below are my favourite ways to add seasonal decor to the farmhouse without painting a thing!

What is Seasonal Decor?

Seasonal decor is exactly what it says. The colours produced by nature throughout the seasons. If you live in the warmer parts of the world the seasons might not be as noticeable but here on the farm, we have four distinct seasons, often in one day! We have all the colours too: browns and golds in Autumn, pastel blossoms and vivid green in Spring, bright sky blue in Summer.

That being said, I have go to ways of decorating for the seasons. Most of my favourite seasonal touches don’t include bins of decor stacked in the garage and pulled out once a year. In fact, the only bins I own are those with our Christmas decorations. The rest of the decor is pulled from what’s already around the house or from one small cupboard of accessories in the living room. Yes, a two shelf cabinet is all the extra seasonal decor I own.

Seasonal Decor Favourite #1: Cushions

It’s no secret I’m always making new cushion covers for the farmhouse. The main reason I do sew my own is that it’s less expensive. This allows me to change my pillow covers throughout the year: blue and white for summer, pastels for spring, golds and mustard for autumn and even the odd Christmas themed cover. Swapping pillow covers is quick and freshens up the room. If you have a neutral backdrop as we do, it also means the pillow covers can be interchangeable between rooms. Of all the decor I own, this is my favourite way to freshen up each season. I simply take off the old covers, wash them and store them away. I have a small box to pull from and many patterns that coordinate and change a look.

Seasonal Decor Favourite #2: Natural Elements

The bits you bring in from the garden are exactly what decorating seasonally is all about. This is my favourite way to accessorise the house during the year because it’s simple and FREE!

At the farmhouse, I cut blossoms during Spring. A vase of whatever is blooming is usually on a side table and a tureen of fresh cress from our stream sits on the island in Summer. It’s handy for all those salads we eat and provides not only beauty but function in our kitchen. Autumn is the time for a collection of pears on the mantel. We always have more than we know what to do with. And in winter, a bucket of bare branches, two pairs of gumboots and some logs stacked by the back door tells the story.

Let what you have in your area dictate how you decorate. It may mean stopping by the side of the road for blossoms, (I’ve done that) or asking a neighbour for some flowers but there’s so much beauty around us that costs nothing. Its simple and never goes out of fashion the way that $30 ‘farmhouse’ sign will.

Decor Favourite #3: China

Using different patterns of China is another way to incorporate the seasons in your home I love. I don’t have a huge collection of China but getting out my floral sandwich plates during Spring and Summer is something I do. If you have a small plate wall like the one in the photo, think about how you could change it for the seasons. For example, floral plates in Spring and yellow in summer. Don’t forget a collection of red for Christmas! You’d only need six or so in the colourways or patterns you love to show the seasons off.

Likewise, you could stack the same plates on a counter or island with a candle or seasonal bunch of nature. You can find more ways to decorate for summer on my Summer Pinterest board.
