Make an Instant Ivy Topiary: DIY

Topiary is one of my favourite forms of decor, both inside and outside the farmhouse. Waiting for a traditional topiary to grow, however, is not something I’m good at. I want it ready now. And I bet you do too! That’s why when I came across this instant Ivy topiary DIY that could be made in less than thirty minutes I had to try it. I think you’ll agree the results are stunning.

How to Make an Ivy Topiary

  • Gather your materials: a pot of ivy (I got mine for $12 at the garden centre), a pair of garden scissors, and a wire coathanger.
  • Remove the plastic trellis from the ivy.
  • Bend the wire coathanger into whatever shape you like. I’ve chosen a circle but a heart shape is also a popular choice.
  • Pinch the hook end of the coat hanger together and poke it into the soil at the back of the ivy where the trellis was
  • Wind the longest stems around the new form. It shouldn’t need securing but use the plastic ties from the trellis that you can take off later if you need to secure it.
  • Use your garden scissors to trim other stems to begin forming the shape.

How to Care For Your DIY Ivy Topiary

Ivy is an easy plant to grow both indoors and out if you remember a few key points.

When growing your Ivy topiary indoors, make sure to mist the leaves a couple of times a week. Humidity can cause them to dry out. This tip is especially applicable for those who are tending to ivy topiaries, which have fewer stems travelling to the top of the plant.

Watering your topiary a couple of times a week is a good rule of thumb, depending on the size of the pot and the air circulation. Check the soil by sticking your fingertip beneath the surface. If the soil is moist, wait to water. If it’s dry, wet it down. Ivy likes to be dry before you water it.

Maintain a good temperature. Ivy likes cooler rooms so it’s perfect for rooms where there is no heater.

Watch the amount of light your plant is getting. Ivy will do best in bright, indirect light. Keep your topiary plant fairly close to a sunny window but not in the direct sun.
