How to style a Bathroom

The house-selling drama continued into the new year (as we thought it would. ha!) and this week the farm went back on the market. As usual, I went about the house prettying everything for photos. The only difference is, this time around, I was able to take my time. One area that was neglected during the first marketing campaign was the main bathroom. We don’t use this bathroom, except for guests, so I can go crazy with styling and know it won’t need changing while we are showing the house. Here are the thought processes I went through and how to style a bathroom with maximum impact and little money! Because seriously, who wants to spend the money? Not me.

My Thought Process

I’m sure there are tutorials you can google on how to style a bathroom, but of course, I have no time for that. What I knew was, our main bathroom is lacking that softness. The fact there is no shower screen seems to add to the cavernous feel. (The shower stall is big. There is no need for a screen.)

In my opinion, a bathroom should feel luxurious too, no matter how much you have to spend. And because our bathroom is visible the moment you walk in the door, I wanted to cozy up the space, bring the outdoors in, make it feel more spa like while keeping* the farmhouse vintage look.

Another problem with the bathroom (from a styling perspective only) is the fact we don’t have a bath. (Long story) Adding luxury is difficult when you can’t place ‘bathing’ style items next to a tub.

So here’s how I tackled these ‘problems’.

What I Added to Style the Bathroom

Firstly, I wanted to stay well under $100 for this mini update. To do this, I headed to our local Kmart to see what items I could find within my budget. Kmart stocks on-trend items that look fairly high-end so you can get a lot for a little. I picked out a few pieces to go with what I had on hand. Then I stopped at the nursery on the way home to grab a small plant. Plants are great for bringing the outdoors in (if you can keep them alive)

Here’s what I already had:

These items were either in the bathroom or scattered around the house. I did as I always do and shopped my home for character pieces

  • fluffy white towels
  • a handmade linen cafe curtain
  • a maiden hair fern
  • a faux cactus
  • the naked lady print (I love her)
  • the peg rail
  • wicker hearts
  • wooden stool

Here’s What I Added:

After assessing what I had I purchased the following items

  • a small potted plant
  • a sage green checked handtowel
  • a bamboo back scrubber.
  • A ceramic soap dispenser and toothbrush holder
  • a bamboo toothbrush
  • A sage candle in a glass vessel

I played with the placement of this pieces. The naked lady print added personality without doing much else. I can’t beleive I was going to sell these prints I’ve had for years! (They were stored under the bed after haning on the chimney breast at our old cottage) The towels added a pop of colour and luxury while the plants brought the outside in and gave the room softness.

I’d love to hear what you think of the changes.
