How to Hyggekrog: Cosy Nook Ideas
The other week I started thinking about the approaching Autumn and Winter seasons on the farm. The back part of the house where our kitchen and living room can be very cold and I would like to bring in cosy elements to make the space feel snug and comfy during the colder months. Over on Instagram, one of my follower friends had commented she’d like to see some Hygge styling ideas in the farmhouse. This sparked my interest and before I knew it I was investigating creating a hyggekrog in our kitchen! I bet you don’t even know what a hyggekrog is. I have to admit I didn’t before I went down the Pinterest rabbit hole. So, in this post, I’m going to share with you what hyggekrog is, my take on it and some cosy nook ideas for your home this Autumn and Winter. Read on!
What is Hyggekrog Anyway?
According to Hygge: The Danish Art of Comfort, Joy and Happiness by Britta Olsson, a hyggekrog is, “a comfortable place to sit either in the kitchen or the living room. It’s a cosy nook, window sill, or comfortable furniture that is typically by a window. A hyggekrog is a spot where you can calmly look outside while drinking your tea or coffee, relax and read a book. It generally includes cushions and a cosy blanket to add more comfort.”
And, gosh, isn’t that idea right up my farmhouse alley? I love to read, and drink coffee. Gazing out our window is high on my list of cosy winter activities. So, including a cosy hyggekrog of some kind in our kitchen area seems a logical extension to an area I already love to be in.
I did a lot of pictorial research on what a cosy nook could look like in the farmhouse kitchen. Yes, it might be as simple as an armchair you can curl up in but a cosy nook might also be an eating area. A country-style eating nook would be Hygge with tonnes of floral cushions, a big pot of tea on the table and some yummy hot scones or a plate of biscuits to share.
A farmhouse nook can still be cosy in size and style. Think warming timber elements and simply styled seat cushions. Autumn tones can be incorporated using warm colours in plants and flowers or upholstery.
Your cosy nook could be created in a window space you don’t use. It wouldn’t have to cost money. Add a bench, gather up blankets and cushions from elsewhere and bingo! Cosy nook.
Cosy Nook Ideas
Basically, a cosy nook in the Danish tradition will include the following elements. Most of them are not expensive to incorporate into your home as you will already have thme
A nook wide enough to sit in.
A piece of furniture placed by the window or sat in a quiet location will do. For a vintage country look, a squishy armchair or wingback chair would be perfect. I plan to create my cosy nook in the space between the chimney and the kitchen bench.
Cushions
Because don’t we all love cushions and cuddling up with them?! Make sure your cushions are firm enough to give support but still be comfy. I don’t think those hard as rock inserts would qualify as cosy.
Add a blanket or throw for additional warmth and softness. I love to wrap up in a blanket when it’s cold and having one on hand means your cosy nook will be even cosier.

A candle in your favourite scent is the perfect addition when creating a relaxing cosy environment. My favourite autumn and winter scents have titles like Salted Caramel or Spicy Cinnamon. A lamp would be useful on dull days when the sun isn’t doing its job.
Cosy Nook Ideas #4
A pile of books and magazines. You might like to have your favourite gardening books so you can plan for Spring. Personally, I love flicking through home interiors books for inspiration. I have piles of them all over the house. And every nook will need a side table or table to put your warm drinks and books on. Then you’ll be set!
