How To Choose a Rug Without Breaking the Bank

Over the past couple of years, many of my Instagram family have asked me about the rugs in our home. Where did I buy them, how much did they cost, how to choose a rug and where do I find cheap rugs? In this post, I’m sharing the links to all the rugs in our home. I remember the names of most but there are a couple I have no links for, so sorry about that. Plus, I’m going to give you a few tips for buying cheaper rugs that don’t look cheap. Because I don’t know about you, but I don’t want it to look like I have a plastic rug on my floor, even if it is.

How To Choose a Cheap Rug

I follow a simple process to choose the right rug for each room. Ideally, you should look at your furniture that won’t be changing and use that as a base for your colour choice. These two items need to play together so it’s important they have the same depth of colour or the rug picks up a colour in its pattern. (If you want a patterned rug)

Here’s what I do to get the best deal:

With my colour in mind (and possibly a style)

  • Measure the space. In the case of a rug bigger IS BETTER. It should be at least the length of your sofa or have room for r your feet if going under your bed. For our sofa and hall, I chose 2 x 3m rugs. The bedroom is 3x4m.
  • If you are not sure of the style you want do a Pinterest or google search for ideas. I look for Boho, Vintage, or Traditional styles
  • Find a rug website and filter by your desired colour and style. When you find a rug you like it’s time to start shopping around the different sites.
  • When you think you have found your rug check the details such as thickness, (thicker the better) and what its made of. Polypropylene is a good choice for high-traffic areas but it can look shiny and cheap so be careful to look at the thickness and how it was made. This often determines the price.
  • If you are looking for value, wool or hand-knotted will most likely be out of budget. Don’t even bother to dream
  • With your rug chosen, it is time to shop the sites again. This is how you save. Copy and Paste the name of the rug you want or do a google image search. The same rug will appear on many sites
  • Compare shipping. Others (starting with T & W) will tell you the rug will leave the warehouse in a week. After you’ve paid you discover there are actually none in the warehouse so delivery won’t be until March! This actually happened to me.
  • Compare delivery
  • Press the button on the rug with the best deal.
  • Don’t forget to buy a rug pad that is a little smaller than the size of the rug. A rug pad provides grip and creates a more luxe. expensive look to your rug.
