Farmhouse Christmas Tree 2021

Every year the time seems to fly by faster and faster. I guess that’s what happens as you get older. Still, I cannot believe it’s already time to decorate our Christmas tree. It seems like only a month or so ago I was decorating our country-style Christmas tree. I loved the tartan feel of last Christmas but I think I love this theme EVEN MORE! In this post, you’ll see how I decorated our tree this year in a Gingerbread theme. And believe me, it’s not as cutsie and childish as you might think!

Why I chose a Gingerbread Theme for our Christmas Tree 2021

Firstly, just let me say I adore gingerbread. I would eat it every day if possible but that’s beside the point. Last year, I saw a couple of bloggers who had duped the Anthropologie doormat above. I searched high and low for an easy way to create one myself. At that time I did not own a Cricut machine and making a stencil by hand was a bit of a stretch, even for me. Anyway, long story short, that mat popped up in my Pinterest feed again and it sparked an idea for our Christmas tree theme for this year.

Gathering Ideas for a Gingerbread Themed Christmas Tree

The first thing I did when thinking about my tree this year was to decide on the color palette. A gingerbread theme has the potential to become overly childlike and kitche. I decided to use the brownish colour of real gingerbread as the base and add touches of soft peachy pink, cream and soft gold.

I used the gingerbread house as inspiration and cut out little houses to make card decorations for my tree.

I also went for a trip to Myer and stocked up on some baubles in the colour palette I’d chosen. I looked in other cheaper outlets first but the ones at Myer were the exact colour I wanted and were such pretty shapes.

I also purchased some gold wire baubles, gold stars, and 3d acorns. These were a perfect match for the little houses I’d made. I don’t typically spend money on expensive ornaments. It was such fun to have a splurge and the ornaments were on sale so even better!

I also purchased as many metres of coffee-coloured ribbon as Spotlight had left as well as a few spools of wired glitter ribbon and some in a creamy pale pink.

When I got home, I raided my two bins of Christmas decorations (yes, I only have two!). I took out bits and pieces I thought would coordinate and put everything on the bench to start.

Now for the fun part.

Decorating the Christmas Tree

As you probably know if you’ve been around for a while, the tree I purchased last year was a heap of rubbish and fell over. A number of my favourite baubles broke. I was so upset. So the first thing to do was find a new tree. I purchased this from Big W and while it doesn’t look exactly real it does have the sparse look of Spruce I wanted. It also looks quite realistic now it’s decorated.

TIP: If you are adding lights, wind them on as you add each tier of the tree. It’s much easier.

I always add the lights first and turn them on. It helps me see if there are any gaps I need to tweak before I add the ornaments.

Next, I added the largest baubles, tucking them into the tree as far as I could to add depth. As this tree has gaps between each layer of branches this makes it look fuller. I always add the baubles in a zig-zag kind of pattern to create interest and symmetry. I repeated this process with the smaller baubles, hanging them closer to the edge. I also added the gingerbread houses I made at this time.

Last of all, I tied bows with long tails to the tree to add whimsy and a little Victorian charm. Of course, my Christmas angel went on the top. She has been on top of the Christmas tree every year since I was born.
