Cottage Style Rug Choices

Choosing cottage style or vintage rugs for your home can be a minefield. There are so many factors to consider, such as prices, size, style and the material the rug is made from. I recently purchased new rugs for Blackbird Cottage. So in this post, I’ll share my choices plus tips for getting the right rug for your home.

The Look

The look of the rug is the thing I consider first. The colours and style play a role in creating the vibe you want for your home. I want to keep the vintage look going and love a patterned rug. So for Blackbird Cottage I have chosen four very different rugs plus a hall runner. Unlike the farmhouse rugs, none of the rugs match. They create a different cottage look in each room.

In the hall, I chose the Olivia runner from Miss Amara. It’s patent is subtle enough to let the bold colour on the walls be the hero, It has tiny touches of colour that contrast with our earthy green colour scheme. The weave is soft yet durable.

The look of my office is soft and feminine. To provide contrast and warmth, I’m introducing a pale peach and beige vintage rug. The soft furnishings will have touches of this too as an accent colour.

Our bedroom will have the brown vintage-style rug we brought from the farm. This will coordinate with the ochre-coloured wallpaper. When choosing a vintage or vintage-style rug you need to pay attention to the role your rug will have. Will it be the hero or the supporting actor? This should dictate the style and colour you choose. You can read more about choosing a vintage rug in this post.

Jute Rugs

I love a jute rug. There are many affordable options around. I’ve decided on TWO jute rugs for our cottage. Our lounge will have a navy jute rug to create a casual cottage feel and add colour relief from the green trims. For the guest room, I’ve chosen a playful scalloped jute rug. It echoes the scallops in the rattan light fitting. It’s important to have elements that tie together in a room. It makes a space feel cohesive.

An important factor when thinking about rug choice is the size. A rug that goes under a bed should have plenty of room on either side for feet to have a soft place to land. My rug placement guide below should give you ideas of sizes for different areas of your home.
