Choosing Light Fittings

The renovation process of the original part of Blackbird Cottage is well underway. So, it’s time for choosing light fittings that complement the style and age of the house, while not being too twee. There is nothing I love more than a pretty light fixture. The perfect choice adds such charm to a room and can really reflect your personality.

Our cottage was built in 1880 and did not have ceiling lights or electricity. This makes it harder if we want to have an original, yet modern, look. However, it gives us the scope to choose any lighting we want. It’s an opportunity to go over the top. But will we?

One of my first considerations when choosing light fittings is the size and scale. It is so easy to get this wrong.

I did!

I originally planned on smaller more cottage-style pendants for our new home. I was under the misconception the ceilings are much lower and the rooms smaller. (Mostly because I was wandering around in dark, unplastered spaces.) Once the plaster went up and we could visualize the room size, I realized my choices were too small. Luckily, I was able to designate other spots in the new part of the house for these lights so my choices did not go to waste.

Then I went back to the internet and ordered more lights for the bigger spaces. While I wanted a cottage feel, I also wanted lights that were not what people expect in a space. I want them to be statements.

So what did I choose?

The three pendants pictured below will feature in the cottage.

The rattan scallop pendants are from Ivory and Deene. They add a touch of whimsy to the bedrooms. I love the detail in the scalloped edges and the textured finish.

The milk glass pendant is a replica of the shade we had in our ensuite at the farm. It’s not a massive light but will add a vintage cottage feel to our small hallway. It will also cast a soft glow over the walls. This as well as the ceramic pleated shades for the kitchen were purchased from Fat Shack Vintage. I love these ceramic shades. They’re so dainty.

Choosing light fittings for our living room and dining nook was easy! I picked large black wire chandeliers from Amazon. These add a more formal look while staying in keeping with the simplicity of the cottage. I have also purchased brass and rattan wall sconces. They will be in the bedrooms in place of lamps. (Maybe) I might change my mind once I see them, you know me.

  1. Lindy I love the lights that you have chosen. Different but in keeping the cottage . It’s coming along nicely. Love the beautiful old shingles as well. But wouldn’t be water tight. Have a great day.🥰
