Blue and White Farmhouse Decor

There’s no denying, blue is my all time favourite colour to decorate with and to wear. Over the years, I’ve veered away from blue. I’ve delved into more popular schemes like chocolate and avocado. I’ve even tried neutrals and green. There have even been pumpkin coloured walls! But I always come back to blue and since I started to reintroduce it to the farmhouse, our home feels more like us. Why? To me, blue and white farmhouse decor is perfect in every way. It’s classic, it’s calming and it suits so many decorating styles.

Here are some ways you can add blue and white to your home. Even if it’s not a farmhouse!

Blue and White Decor in Soft Furnishings

There are so many options when you introduce the blue and white scheme into soft furnishings. If your home is country or farmhouse style like ours you can pick soft blues like chambray or french blue. You can use cotton and linen in stripes, florals, checks and solids. Mixing the patterns is half the fun!

If you stick to tones of one kind of blue (in my case a chambray denim colour) you can play with all kinds of pattern in curtains, as well. Why not try making some of your own?

Decorating with Blue and White China

I think this is really where my obsession with blue and white farmhouse decor started. A long time ago, my grandmother gifted me her collection of Burleigh Willow Pattern with gold edging. For a number of years after that, she added to my collection on birthdays. At that time we had a kitchen painted Wedgwood blue with white cabinets. It looked stunning with all my blue and white china.

You might not be lucky enough to own a collection like mine but even one or two pieces will look lovely displayed on your counter or table.

My willow jug is used to hold wooden utensils next to the stove and I use a willow cup and saucer for my morning coffee every day!

Here, I’ve used a soup tureen as a container for our watercress. I mean, let’s face it, I’m never gonna use the tureen to serve soup. We’re not that fancy here!

Garden touches of Blue and White

Another way I like to used blue and white in the farmhouse is to bring the garden in. Our garden is filled with mostly blue and white flowers so it’s easy to cut a bunch, add some greenery and create a pretty vignette on the coffee table. If you don’t have a garden but want to introduce floral touches like this, invest in some good quality fakes! I love fake flowers. They cost a little to get realistic looking ones but when you think of the amount you save by not purchasing real bunches it’s definitely a win. The faux flowers I own have fooled many visitors. (Mostly because I put water in the vase.) Another economical way to bring blue and white in with flowers is to buy pots of daisies or lavender when they are in season. These will last for ages inside and when they started to look ragged you can plant them in the garden or toss them. You get flowers for four times as long at half the cost of buying a bunch.

Blue and White Bedding or Linens

Nothing says fresh like a blue and white bedding scheme. I loved the recent update to our bedroom with blue and white touches. So much so, I’m thinking of adding floral curtains to the mix.

But the colour scheme doesn’t have to stop there. Think tea towels, towels, napkins and table clothes. Mix the patterns with solid whites or my favourite black. Add some touches of brass or gold to add depth and you have the perfect scheme.

Blue and White Furniture

Chalk paint is so easy to use. And the epitome of the collected, loved farmhouse look is painted white furniture. But why not add some punch by painting something blue? You could also add chairs upholstered in blue and white or blue and white rugs. Pair this with timber touches and textures and you get the perfect scheme! What do you think?
