Decorate For Autumn in 10 Minutes
Somewhat sadly, I walked up the path yesterday to discover that Autumn has arrived at the farm. I’ve been denying the fact for a week or so. Our maple tree, usually the last to lose its leaves, deposited some on the lawn. On one hand, I was upset because it feels like we didn’t have summer this year. On the other hand, I’m excited. I love the season of Autumn. The weather is perfect. The change in season is a perfect excuse to start cooking yummy things and changing up stuff around the farmhouse. When things stay the same for too long, I get bored. So today, I’m going to share with you some 10-minute autumn decorating ideas I found on Pinterest.
These ideas are not meant for you to go mental throughout your entire house and do them all. Unless you want to, and more power to you if you love the maximalist look 🙂 My thought here is that you pick something you like and make it your own. Here in Australia, we’re not big on ‘decorating’ our homes seasonally but with home becoming a more important space over the past year, why not make our rooms beautiful? Let’s decorate simply and with the knowledge then when we tire of it we can put it away for next year. Or feed the compost bin!
10 Minute Autumn Decorating Idea #1
Apples and a vase of hydrangeas are a simple and functional way to decorate for the season. You all know how much I love fresh flowers or any kind of foliage in the house. So pick (or buy) a few hydrangeas. A vase of dried hydrangea with muted tones would be perfect. Add a woven tray filled with green apples from your tree (or bought at your local market) and you have a beautiful, edible display for your kitchen island or table. This idea would also look perfect with other seasonal flowers such as daisies or dalhlias with red apples or pears. When you are done with the fruit you can turn it into pear butter or stewed fruit.
Decorating Idea #2
Fill your kitchen bench with functional elements that reflect the changing colours of the season. I LOVE this idea for Autumn decorating. Grab a stack of rolling pins or warm wooden utensils and put them in a crock. Change your tea towels to more muted Autumn tones and pile some pears, walnuts, gourds or other seasonal fruit in a bowl. If you keep to timber tones, the result will be neutral and seasonal.

Buy an Autumn scented candle and create a votive. This is another simple idea that you could easily personalise. All you need to do is wrap some jute or garden twine around a glass vessel of some kind and tie a knot. You could also use thin ribbon in a colour you love. Then tuck an autumn leaf or two into the string. Next, put some gum nuts, coffee beans or walnuts into the bottom of the vessel and place your candle on the top.
Layer Blankets, Throws and Rugs
10 minute Autumn decorating idea number #4 is to bring out blankets and throws. Drape one or two across the back of your couch or display a folded pile of blankets on a stool where they can be accessed. Last year I tried folding them over the rungs of a vintage ladder. It looked great on the verandah. There’s nothing cosier than snuggling under a blanket to watch a movie and you don’t have to use ‘Autumn’ colours. Simply use the blankets that fit your theme. Or buy or make a neutral chunky knit blanket. Try layering a thin rug over another rug on the floor. This gives a really cosy effect.
Autumn Decorating Idea #5
Try a simple yet classy craft. Make some paper apples and pears from old book pages. This simple craft is an easy and relaxing way to spend an afternoon. The making might take a little longer than ten minutes but the display would be super effective stacked on a plate on the coffee table or island. Or in a row along your mantel!
Another Idea with Books
Make some white or cream jackets for books (so you don’t ruin them). On your computer, type up your favourite autumn words and glue them along the spines. Then stack the books.
Make your Own Book Stack
If you’d like to make a book stack using my typography below, you can find it in the Resource Library
Change Your Cushions
You knew there were going to be cushions, didn’t you! I have such a collection of covers that can be used for a range of seasons and looks. For Autumn last year, I used scraps of gingham to make black and white covers for our porch seat.
Rows of Pears
I have to find a way to use up all the pears we have! You could use any seasonal fruit or vegetables. Stack them in a dough bowl and put them on your kitchen bench. To make the fruit stand on end I’ve cut the base of each pear to make them flat.
Cut some Autumn Branches
When I mentioned with idea in a FB group once, someone commented they don’t have any in their garden (or didn’t have a garden). My answer to this would be to ask a neighbour, go for a walk to the park and find some fallen branches or buy some realistic faux branches or leaves online. I glued faux leaves onto a branch last year. The effect, while not one I’d put where people could investigate up close, looked great on the verandah!
I hope these ideas have given you some inspiration to bring Autumn into your house this season. I know I’m inspired!
